Bad Idea of the Day: Inhaling Alcohol Instead of Drinking It

Hey, you guys, the weekend’s here and nothing says par-tay like sitting on a patio drinking some ginger beer or hitting da clubs and drowning the stresses of the work week with a martini or five.

Or, you could avoid drinking your alcohol like a chump and just straight-up vape that shiz like a champ. Yep, it’s totally possible (and totally dangerous!) to just inhale your favorite booze. No need to waste precious minutes guzzling that sweet, sweet nectar. Now there’s the option of breathing it directly into your body.

The bizarre practice of inhaling your booze isn’t just relegated to the grungy dorms of college students; it’s also available online and even in some bars.

There’s a bunch of different methods for inhaling alcohol: YouTube clips show DIY versions of alcohol inhalers, while an inhaling accessory called AWOL (Alcohol Without Liquid) has already been banned in the U.S. Vaportini, however is being sold legally online in all 50 states.

I know what you’re thinking: Why would anyone want to ban such a speedy way to get your buzz and dodge all those empty calories? Well, there are some dangerous and not-so-fun reasons to avoid inhaling your alcohol.

Since the alcohol vapors are breathed in, they go directly into your bloodstream and over to your lungs and brain, while avoiding your stomach and liver altogether. By evading your stomach and liver, the alcohol bypasses the body’s natural safety mechanisms that keep you from getting alcohol poisoning. When you feel sick or nauseated while drinking, your body is telling you that you’ve had one too many. When you throw up, your body is expelling toxins and keeping you from overdosing. But since inhaled booze bypasses the organs that make that stuff happen, if you consume too much, you’re pretty much screwed.

Here at Twirlit, we think it’s great to have a good time, but sometimes we’ve gotta put on our mom caps and recommend you don’t go overboard. You could be putting your life or the lives of others at risk. Plus, you’re missing out on the deliciousness of a fancy cocktail.

Drink responsibly, folks.
