Miley Cyrus Says She Made History at the VMAs

Miley Cyrus has finally broken her silence about her controversial VMA performance — and she doesn’t regret a single twerk.

“I don’t pay attention to the negative because I’ve seen this play out so many times,” she says of all the people who found her performance to be disgusting or embarrassing. “How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?”

Madonna‘s done it. Britney‘s done it,” Miley added. “Every VMA performance, that’s what you’re looking for; you’re wanting to make history.”

Indeed, we all remember freaking out over Madonna and Britney’s VMA kiss. Many years earlier, Madonna turned heads when she rolled around on stage singing “Like a Virgin” in a wedding dress. Neither star ruined her career, though you could argue that Miley’s performance was a bit more extreme.

“Me and Robin the whole time said, ‘You know we’re about to make history right now,'” Miley says. “What’s amazing is I think now, we’re three days later and people are still talking about it. They’re overthinking it. You’re thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn’t even think about it ’cause that’s just me!”

So you wanted to make history but you also didn’t think about it? Huh?

I agree that people are making way too big of a deal about Miley’s tongue-filled twerkfest (and somehow nobody is criticizing Robin Thicke… yay sexism). Still, putting thought into one’s career isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Ultimately, I say kudos to Miley for ignoring the criticism and moving forward, history or not.
