New Hookup App ‘Pure’ Is for Sex Only
A new app claims to be even simpler than Tinder — because it’s just for sex.
Pure, a new invitation-only app that’s not yet available in the App Store, is just for hookups. You can apply to become a member by providing your email, city and gender, and specifying which gender(s) you’re looking for.
Once you’re a member and you decide you’d like to hook up, you submit a request. You say if you’re looking for a man or a woman, and if you can host or travel. Then you’ll receive matches. Your photos are only visible to your matches, not all the app’s members. If your matches select you too, you’ll get connected.
Then things get sexy: afterward, you can request more photos of your match’s face, body or private parts. “If you want to see more pictures, just request them. No prior chat necessary,” the app’s website says. In case you’re planning to run for office someday, Pure co-founder Roman Sidorenko says these photos are not stored on the app’s server.
Sidorenko says Pure takes the guesswork out of dating apps. “Both of them say you can meet people nearby for whatever,” Sidorenko says of Tinder and Grindr. “Some people say they’re looking for friendship, some for a date, some want a hookup, some want to chat… the process of figuring out what people want right now is time consuming.”
He has a point. But if Tinder is really too time-consuming for you, you’re lazy. Also, can’t we specify what we’re looking for with check boxes or listed interests? And can’t we just be more honest with each other? Pure really turns us into commodities.
Some also speculate that women won’t want to join this app, not because women aren’t interested in casual sex, but because they have to worry about things like safety and sexual assault more than men do. But “Historically, females have been most often victimized by someone they knew,” Sidorenko says.
It also appears that Pure might cater more specifically to people looking to have affairs. Just because you want casual sex doesn’t mean you’d sleep with someone who isn’t single.
