Racist Shop Clerk in Zurich Wouldn’t Show Oprah $38,000 Handbag
You think Oprah can’t afford a $38,000 handbag?
When the talk show maven visited Zurich, Switzerland, a shop clerk refused to show her a Tom Ford “Jennifer” handbag, which costs nearly $40,000.
“Obviously, The Oprah Winfrey Show is not shown in Zurich,” Oprah told Entertainment Tonight. “I say to the woman, ‘Excuse me, may I see that bag right above your head?’ And she says to me, ‘No, it’s too expensive.’ She refused to get it.”
The Switzerland tourism office has since issued Oprah an apology.
“We are very sorry for what happened to her,” said spokeswoman Daniela Baer. The office also tweeted that the sales clerk “acted terribly wrong.”
I guess the clerk didn’t realize that Oprah topped Forbes’ list of the Most Powerful Celebrities this year. She’s so rich that although her earnings dropped by $88 million this year, she still made an estimated $77 million between June 2012 and June 2013. She actually didn’t earn the highest of everyone on the list, but maintains the most powerful position through press mentions and social media influence.
Oprah brought up the handbag incident when asked about the Paula Deen N-word controversy. Although Oprah says racism “still exists,” she feels that for her, sexism is a bigger issue.
“The sexism thing is huge,” she said. “The higher the ladder you climb it gets huge, because men are used to running things.”
