Totally Real, Not Made Up Marilyn Monroe Quotes (Wink, Wink)

Marilyn Monroe was an actress, singer, model and sex symbol who lived large and died young under somewhat questionable circumstances. If you believe the Internet, she was also a scholar, a feminist ahead of her time, a philosopher and a font of endlessly quotable platitudes.

Take these gems, for example. Although widely attributed to Ms. Monroe, there’s no evidence that she ever said any of them:

This was actually said (kind of) by Bette Midler, not Marilyn.

There’s no evidence she ever said this.

She didn’t say this. The tip off? Size zero didn’t exist in Marilyn’s time.

Again, there’s no evidence she said this or anything like it.

I’m pretty sure this is a joke, but it’s too good not to include.

Fake Marilyn Monroe quotes are everywhere — and now they’re here, too

For every real thing Marilyn Monroe actually said, there are probably 10 quotes that have been falsely attributed to her. Think about that before you go slapping a bad tattoo of her face on your thigh beside that insufferable “Can’t handle me at my worst” quote.

But hey, since there’s nothing we can do about the abundance of fake Marilyn quotes, we might as well be part of the problem.

Here are some beautiful, poignant Marilyn Monroe “quotes” we’ve turned into graphics for your enjoyment.

Pin them! Tumble them! Distribute them far and wide so that someday, the walls of your children’s bedrooms will be adorned with posters of Marilyn Photoshopped so her head’s shaved on one side, saying, “Drop the bass, Skrillz!”
