Is Willow Smith’s New Video Too Risque? (VIDEO)

Remember “Whip My Hair”? Willow Smith has just released a new single called “Summer Fling” and it’s becoming a lot more controversial than her first track was — some people are saying it’s way too sexy for her age.

Of note: Willow Smith is 12 years old. So first of all, maybe it’s a bit weird that Smith’s song is about a summer fling? She’s pretty young for dating anyway, at least in my books. I was a total dork at 12, though, so maybe my take on that is skewed. But the word “fling,” to me, implies something casual and, let’s face it, something that involves sex. That’s way too much for a 12-year-old, even if the intent is innocent.

The most troubling thing to me, though, is that the boys in this video — the ones Smith and her friends are crushing on — look a fair bit older than them, more like 15 or 16 than 12 or 13. One of the boys has a tattoo on his chest, and in most jurisdictions that’s not legal to get even with parental permission until you’re 16.

Three years’ difference in age isn’t a big deal at all in your 20s or 30s, but when you’re 12 it’s definitely inappropriate. It’s also illegal. I have a son, and if I found out when he was 15 that he was dating — or even flirting with — a 12-year-old, I’d never let him out of his room again.

So yeah, this video isn’t outrageous — but it’s walking a line that makes me really uncomfortable, and is just one more example of how culture presents and addresses preteens and young teenagers in a way that pushes them toward grown-up appearances and actions way earlier than seems healthy.

Smith’s high-cut bikini bottoms might not seem that risque because apparently six-year-olds wear string bikinis now, but they should, because she’s a child. Some of the lyrics could be interpreted to be about a physical relationship, or they might not be — but the hint in there, and that’s creepy enough to me.

What do you think: is this song too sexy for a 12-year-old singer, or is it just a harmless pop track?
