As it turns out, lots of things you think you know are wrong.
Bad information, misinterpretations and old wives’ tales abound, meaning it’s sometimes tough to tell truth from fiction. In this nifty video from Mental Floss, Hank Green dispels 50 misconceptions you have (or at least have heard) about science, history and the world around you. It’s like an awesome little snack for your brain!
Here are a few highlights:
- The brontosaurus didn’t exist.
- There’s no such thing as the dark side of the moon, there’s just a side we can’t see. Sorry, Pink Floyd.
- Sally Ride wasn’t the first woman in space.
- Adding salt to water doesn’t make it boil faster – it actually does the opposite.
- Bats aren’t blind.
- Glass isn’t a liquid. Nor is it really a solid, at least not in the way we typically think of solids. WHOA.
- You don’t swallow eight spiders a year while sleeping. That’s a relief.
