Michelle Obama Confronts Heckler at DNC Fundraiser
Don’t heckle Michelle Obama and expect to get away with it!
That’s the lesson from last night’s Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Washington, where an LGBT advocate interrupted the first lady’s speech.
Mrs. Obama was about 12 minutes into her 20-minute speech when the heckler started yelling in support of an executive order on gay rights. Mrs. Obama fought back:
“One of the things I don’t do well is this,” the first lady said. She then gave the heckler two options: “Listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving.”
Apparently, the crowd begged Mrs. Obama to stay, so she did — and the heckler, who was later identified as Ellen Sturtz from GetEqual, was escorted out of the event. As she was leaving, she said she wanted “federal equality before I die.”
“She came right down in my face,” Sturtz later said of the first lady’s reaction. ”I was taken aback.”
Of course I support equal rights — but heckling is uncool, and Michelle Obama gettin’ tough is one of my favorite things. Unfortunately, there were no cameras present to capture the moment. CBS News has audio of the incident, but you can’t really hear the beginning of what the first lady says to the heckler.
