Patrick Stewart’s Speech on Violence Against Women Will Give You the Feels (VIDEO)

Sir Patrick Stewart is the best. He played Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. His Twitter feed is a constant stream of hilarious pictures and cool insights. He’s infinitely memeable:

He’s also a vocal advocate for protections for victims of domestic violence, a fact he recently spoke about at Comicpalooza 2013. When thanked by a fan for his work with Amnesty International in preventing violence against women, Sir Stewart made a passionate speech about his experience growing up with an abusive, deeply troubled father and a mother who received the brunt of the abuse. He brought up his work with Refuge, a network of sanctuaries for domestic violence victims, and Combat Stress, an organization that helps current and former soldiers who struggle with PTSD.

At the end, he comforted the fan — who was herself a victim of abuse — with a hug. From the description of a video uploaded to YouTube by the fan:

When he embraced me he told me “You never have to go through that again, you’re safe now.” I just kept thanking him.
