Playing This New Facebook Game Helps Real-Life Women (VIDEO)

Facebook games can feel like a waste of time, but now there’s a game that actually accomplishes worthwhile things in real life while you play. Play Half the Sky and help women from around the world. Does it get any better?

You start the game by meeting a fictional character, Radhika from India. As you do things in the game, it triggers real-word actions. For example, collecting books for girls in the game triggers actual book donations from Room to Read. Sponsors have provided $500,000 in donations for players to find and unlock.

Game creators Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn are both journalists and women’s rights advocates. The game developed out of their bestselling book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, and a PBS series of the same name.

So while you’re derping around the Internet looking for something to do, why not check out Half the Sky and get your social justice on?
