Mom With Hearing Impairment Hears Her Son’s Voice for the First Time (VIDEO)

Most of us take our hearing for granted. We love jamming to the latest tunes and communicating with our friends and family, and we never stop to think about what life would be like if we couldn’t do those things.

Imagine not being able to hear your loved ones’ voices. For Dawn Keim, a Texan mom with a hearing impairment, this was a reality — until recently. Keim had never heard her 8-year-old son’s voice until a cochlear implant gave the 43-year-old mom of two the awesome gift of hearing.

“It’s overwhelming and far better than I expected it to be,” said Keim. “I was so fearful of what I was going to hear and what it was going to sound like. I’m still overwhelmed.”

Keim’s son Asher is thrilled with his mom’s new ability.

“I’m just really excited that she can finally hear,” said the little guy.

Keim lost her hearing 15 years ago because of a genetic condition. She thought she would never hear again, until the talk show The Doctors gave her the chance of a lifetime. Keim traveled to the House Ear Institute in L.A. where she was fitted with a breakthrough cochlear implant.
