‘House in the Middle of the Street’ Demolished
When the Chinese government told Luo Baogen and his wife that it wanted to demolish their home to make way for a new freeway, the couple refused. Baogen claimed the money the government offered them in exchange for moving wouldn’t be enough to cover rebuilding costs.
So, the Baogens kept their house, and the government built its freeway anyway, leaving the house right where it stood.
The Times Live reports Baogen did eventually accept an offer of 260,000 yuan (about $41,750) and a new parcel of land. The house was demolished on December 1st.
