Hawkeye Initiative Satirizes Gender Stereotypes in Comics

If you’ve read just about any superhero comic, you’ve probably noticed that male characters are nearly always strong and tough, while the women are almost exclusively eye candy. Sure, female characters may get to kick ass and take names, but only if they’re wearing the most revealing outfits possible and posing in ways that are more about being aesthetically pleasing to male readers than actually being useful.

Or, they’re just sitting around reading fashion magazines, worshipping their man and looking both hot and vulnerable while their hero is out fighting crime:

The Hawkeye Initiative challenges and satirizes these sexist stereotypes by putting Hawkeye, a badass member of the Avengers, in the same impossible poses and ridiculously impractical outfits that his female counterparts find themselves in. The Hawkeye Initiative Tumblr describes its mission thusly:

“… This leads me to propose the Hawkeye Test. If your female character can be replaced by Hawkeye in the same pose without looking silly or stupid, then it’s acceptable and probably non sexist. If you can’t, then just forget about it.”
