Jennifer Lawrence in Elle: “In Hollywood, I’m Obese”
The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence looks great to us - but she says that Hollywood thinks she’s fat. In the December 2012 issue of Elle, J-Law dished: “In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress.”
She added: “I’m Val Kilmer in that one picture on the beach.” (Here’s the pic she’s talking about.)
But Jennifer, 22, says she’s not going to succumb to pressure to be thinner - even if it’s for a role. “I’m never going to starve myself for a part,” she said. “I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner’…I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong—not thin and underfed.”
You might think that nobody of note in Hollywood actually criticizes Jennifer for her size, but when The Hunger Games was released, several film critics from reputable publications - like The New York Times - suggested that she was too big for the role of Katniss. The character of Katniss lives in post-apocalyptic world where food is scarce - but seriously? Especially since one reviewer suggested that Jennifer was too big for her love interest, the comments clearly weren’t all about staying faithful to the setting. Did anyone suggest that the men in the film were too beefy?
And beyond The Hunger Games, it’s ridiculous that Jennifer is made to feel inadequate or abnormal. We need a variety of sizes reflected on the silver screen!
This just makes me sad. Keep fighting the good fight, J-Law!
