‘The Avengers’ Smash Box Office Records (VIDEO)

The Avengers proved that six superheroes are better than one. The Marvel comic film smashed through box office records, raking in $200.3 million this opening weekend, taking down Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2. Last summer, the wizard and friends took home $169.2 million.

It’s great to see a well-selected cast and the writing and direction from Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator, Joss Whedon. It’s also nice to know that people still go to the movies. I don’t know, I was worried there for a bit, but sitting smack dap in the front row (I went a wee bit too late), I realized that people still enjoy a good ol’ superhero flick.

Demographic breakdowns showed that all types of viewers were down for the film, keeping theaters packed all weekend long. The Avengers had the largest female opening weekend population since Iron Man 2, with 40% of the film-goers being the ladies.

Check out the trailer if you aren’t already one of the millions of fans who went to see the flick.
