Alicia Silverstone Defends Pre-Chewing Food For Her Baby

Despite the backlash that Alicia Silverstone, 35, received after posting a vid of her pre-chewing food for her son Bear Blu, the Clueless star defends her pre-mastication practices.

Silverstone understands how uncomfortable people are with the idea, but says that “This [pre-chewing] has been going on for thousands of years — still going on all over the place — and it’s natural.”

“It’s a part of the weaning process, so while I’m still breast-feeding it’s just a way to introduce him to food when he doesn’t have teeth… and he can’t chew,” added Silverstone.

Bear Blu is the first child for the actress and her husband, Christopher Jareki. Bear is going on one year now, and we wonder how long this pre-chewing will continue. Controversy surrounds this issue, and many contest if the practice is hygienic.

I don’t know. I haven’t heard of any babies dying from well-chewed food before. The baby did live inside her body for nine months. Remember when people had wet nurses? It was seen as improper for a new mom to breastfeed her baby, and now critics are all agasp when a mother decides not to give up the nipple. Is this just an overreaction?

What do you think? What’s a new mom to do?
