Stephen Colbert Is Back On The Colbert Report And Explains Why He Was Gone

After The Colbert Report suspended production last week and missed two episodes, the popular Comedy Central news satire show returned to the air last night. Host (and titular character) Stephen Colbert was behind the desk.

Colbert was his usual hilarious self, at one point pointing to his own face and saying, “I can understand why the machinery of this great nation ground to a halt last week when you were denied this.”

He was quick to address the “wild rumors about why [he] was gone,” hinting that the rumors that he left the show to be with his ailing mother are correct. “Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails,” he said. “Confidential to a lovely lady,” he added.

When The Colbert Report unexpectedly suspended production last week, rumors swirled that the show was in trouble. Some speculated that Comedy Central was cancelling the program, or that the FCC had shut the show down because Colbert had gone too far in his farcical quest to run for president. Others theorized that a labor dispute was the cause.

Ultimately, the reason for the show’s brief hiatus was much more personal. The Colbert family is intensely private, but we now know that Stephen’s mother is battling some kind of health problems and he left the show to be by her side.
